"Compare the two most popular rafting stretches in Rishikesh — Shivpuri (16 km, Grade III) vs Marine Drive (24 km, Grade IV). Honest assessment of rapid intensity, duration, cliff jumping, and value for money."

Shivpuri vs Marine Drive Rafting in Rishikesh: The Definitive Comparison

Among the four main rafting stretches on the Ganges through Rishikesh, two dominate in popularity: the 16 km Shivpuri stretch and the 24 km Marine Drive stretch. These two routes attract different types of adventurers and create distinctly different river experiences. If you are trying to decide between them, this honest, experience-based comparison by our IRF-certified team will help you make the right call.

The Key Question: Experience Level

The single most important factor in choosing between Shivpuri and Marine Drive is your prior experience with adventure water sports. Here is the honest breakdown:

  • Shivpuri (16 km): Genuinely suitable for first-timers, families, teenagers, and office groups with mixed fitness levels. You do not need prior rafting experience, but you should be prepared to get very wet and actively paddle.
  • Marine Drive (24 km): Best for those who have either rafted before, have good general fitness and swimming confidence, or are specifically seeking Grade IV rapid intensity. Not recommended as a first-ever rafting experience.

Shivpuri Stretch (16 km) — In Detail

The Route

The Shivpuri stretch begins at the wide, sandy beaches of Shivpuri village, approximately 17 km upstream from Rishikesh on National Highway 58 (Badrinath Highway). The river here is wide and the current is steady — a gradual introduction before the rapids begin. The stretch terminates at NIM Beach in Rishikesh town, within walking distance of the Ram Jhula area.

The Rapids: What to Expect

The Shivpuri stretch features six named Grade III rapids and several smaller Grade II sections:

  • Cross Fire (Grade III): A complex rapid with multiple channel choices and strong diagonal waves. Teams must paddle hard left to avoid a large boulder on the right bank. One of the most photographed rapids on the stretch.
  • Three Blind Mice (Grade III): Named for three standing waves that appear in quick succession. The second wave is the largest — typically 1.5-2 meters at normal water levels — and will wash over the front of the raft, soaking anyone in the bow seats.
  • Roller Coaster (Grade III+): The highlight of the Shivpuri stretch — a 200-meter continuous run of large standing waves that builds progressively in size. The last three waves are the biggest and the raft will be riding essentially vertical between them. This is the rapid where most splash photos are taken. Pure, joyous chaos.
  • Golf Course (Grade III): A technical rapid requiring the guide to thread the raft through a narrow channel between exposed boulders. The entry is the most technical part — once through the gate, the run opens into clear water.
  • Initiation, Double Trouble, Hilton (Grade II-III): The final three rapids before NIM Beach, gradually decreasing in intensity as the river approaches the populated sections of Rishikesh town.

Duration and Logistics

  • Time on water: 3-4 hours depending on stops
  • Pit stops: Most operators include a 30-minute snack break at a riverside beach midway through
  • Photography: Operators can arrange for photographers to position at key rapids
  • Transport: Bus or jeep transport from Rishikesh to Shivpuri launch point (30-40 min) included in packages

Marine Drive Stretch (24 km) — In Detail

The Route

The Marine Drive stretch (also called Byasi stretch) begins at the remote Byasi village near Marine Drive, approximately 35 km from Rishikesh town. This upper section of the Ganges flows through a dramatic, uninhabited gorge with sheer cliff walls and no road access for most of its length. The wilderness feel here is completely different from the Shivpuri stretch — you are genuinely in remote river territory.

The Rapids: What to Expect

The Marine Drive stretch includes everything from the Shivpuri stretch PLUS these additional Grade IV sections in the upper portion:

  • Cliff Jumper (Grade IV): The first major challenge of the Marine Drive section — a powerful rapid with a technical entry and strong hydraulic at the base. Named for the 20-35 foot cliff jumping spots immediately adjacent. After navigating the rapid, most groups stop for 20-30 minutes of optional cliff jumping into a deep emerald pool.
  • Body Surfing (Grade IV+): The most unique experience on any of the Rishikesh stretches — participants jump out of the raft and swim through a controlled Grade III rapid wearing only life jackets. The guide observes from the bank and coaches swimmers through. The rush of swimming your own line through a rapid is completely different from rafting. This stops most people's fear of water rapids permanently.
  • Golf Course (Grade III+): Same rapid as on the Shivpuri stretch but approached from above, giving a different perspective and a longer run.

Duration and Logistics

  • Time on water: 5-6 hours including mandatory activity stops
  • Pit stops: Extended beach break for cliff jumping (30-45 min), lunch/snack break, body surfing stop
  • Transport: Longer transport to Marine Drive launch point (60-75 min from Rishikesh) included in packages
  • Energy requirement: This is a full-day physical activity. Eat a proper breakfast. Bring high-energy snacks.

Direct Comparison: Shivpuri vs Marine Drive

  • Distance on water: Shivpuri 16 km versus Marine Drive 24 km
  • Maximum rapid grade: Shivpuri Grade III+ versus Marine Drive Grade IV+
  • Time on water: Shivpuri 3-4 hours versus Marine Drive 5-6 hours
  • Cliff jumping available: Shivpuri minimal versus Marine Drive multiple spots (20-35 ft)
  • Body surfing: Shivpuri not available versus Marine Drive included
  • Price range: Shivpuri Rs. 550-800 versus Marine Drive Rs. 800-1,200 per person
  • Minimum age: Shivpuri 12 years versus Marine Drive 14 years
  • Recommended experience level: Shivpuri first-timers welcome versus Marine Drive some experience preferred
  • Wildlife sightings: Shivpuri occasional versus Marine Drive more frequent (remote gorge sections)

Which One to Choose? Our Recommendation

If this is your first time rafting or your group includes teenagers or participants of mixed fitness — choose Shivpuri. The Grade III+ rapids of the Shivpuri stretch will genuinely excite, soak, and challenge you without being overwhelming. You will leave wanting more, which is exactly the right feeling after a first rafting experience.

If you have rafted before (on any Grade II-III river, even outside Rishikesh), are physically fit, confident in the water, and specifically want the cliff jumping and body surfing experiences — choose Marine Drive. The extra 8 km and additional Grade IV sections justify the price difference, and the cliff jumping stop is genuinely one of the most thrilling additions to any Rishikesh adventure itinerary.
